Along with the entire Jewish people, the JEM team mourns the passing of a Torah scholar and teacher of the highest esteem.
During his lifetime, Rabbi Adin Even-Israel Steinsaltz merited to see his monumental works open Torah scholarship to hundreds of thousands. No doubt many millions more students will join their ranks in the years and generations to come.
To Chabad Chasidim, Steinsaltz will be remembered for his piercing and unblinking honesty. On more than one occasion did he rebuke young Chasidim, challenging them to live up to the Rebbe’s way of living and expectations of his followers – and all in his trademark calm, soft-spoken voice.
Rabbi Steinsaltz was very kind to the JEM team, sitting with us for over four hours in numerous in-depth interviews through the years. We had the honor of assisting with his short but powerful book, “My Rebbe.” Working alongside his sons Meni and Amechaye, we were able to contribute historical information, fact checking and archival photos.
